First time here for a match, although we did stop here afew weeks back. Lovely little ground, a bit different from all the grounds visited in Devon as Locks Lane is surrounded by house's. The picth was a little brown after all the scorching heat we've had recently, although today was cloudy and overcast.
Porthcawl currently play in the South Wales Alliance League, Premier division and Newport Civil Sevice, who play in the Gwent County League. Not knowing a great deal about Welsh non-league football, I have nothing to comapre these against. However based upon the first 45, Im saying Porthcawl play in the stronger league.
There was a decent crowd in attendance, it was a little difficult to tell exactly as there were a load of people in the stand and I was wandering aroundthe outside but I think there were at least 50 people there watching. Plus people were coming at going.
Entrance was free as it was friendly and the crowd was inline for not just 1 match but 2 as the 2nd teams of Porthcawl & Newport were also playing.
I'd barely got the kick off photograph taken, when Portcawl went up the away end, catching Newport fast aleep and scored.
5 Mins later, it was 2-0 as Newport still hadn't woken up
Porthcawl continued to dominate, although at 2-0, Newport had at least woken up. However, the 3rd goal wasn't far off.at this point, Newport came back into the game to make it 3-1, with a well taken goal. Hope of a comeback was short lived, straight from the re-start, Newport lost possession just outside their box in a defencsive mix up and in strolled Portcawl to make in 4-1.
then we almost had 5-1
the we did have 5-1, after a bit of a soft penalty
Newport must have had something in their half-time tea as they came out full of fire in th second half and really should have been back in the game at 5-2, after they also gained a penalty. The home goalie, however had different ideas and amde a glorious save. All penalty saves are glorious as I was down the other end and coudnt really see.
An entertaining match, although Im confused as to the final score. I thought Newport scored in each half yet, Porthcawl posted they won 5-1.
Whatever the final score was, not only was it free but you also got 2 games, as both reserve teams played after the main match, which I believe Porthcawl won 6-2 but I wasn't there for the second game due to other commitments.
enjoy your preseason, the real thing is almost back.
