56 years since England last won a major tournament and it;s the women that do it- and they were even allowed to play football until the early 70s-which has always been a surprise to me-blummin stupid men
It's been a wonderful tournament from start to finish. The lionesses were truly magnificent. At least 4 of them played for Sunderland early in their careers. Jill Scott went to Monkwearmouth Comp, same as me, albeit 20 years or so after I left. But still.
It's been a tournament of records
Record Score 8-0 England vs Norway
Record crowds (group stage) 68, 871 in the opener at Old Trafford against Austria (who played pretty well through the tournament)
Most goals in the group stage 14-England
Fewest goals conceded in the group stage 0 - England
Record Crowds throughout- Over 500,000 people attend matches
Final crowd 87192 beating the previous highest which was set back in 1964 Spain vs Soviet Union, 79115-which can of blows the theory out of the water that no-one wants to watch womens football. I do because it's exciting, there is no drama or rolling about as in the mens game and most of all there are GOALS, which is all we ever want to see anyway.
