BAOR vs Hibs 1st May 1946

Something different this weekend. The weather has been awful and I'm not well, so we are not off to a match this weekend. Instead we will be shouting at the TV from 1230 with a host of wonderful games to watch.

But I want to talk about a photo that came into our store this week. It's great when something like this arrives, with lots of information of the photo. It makes research so  much easier.

After the WW2, the British army occupied parts of Germany. And a lot of football matches were played out there between late 1945 & 1946.

There is a great blog Non League Matters that has a great deal of information

May 1st 1946 a BAOR (British Army of the Rhine) XI took on top Scottish footballers Hibs at Celle. This was taken by an unknown solider based out there at the time. From the photo you can see there is no stands, just crowds of British soliders cheering on wildly. I would also like to think there may have been some locals in the crowds, enjoying a return to normality but probably not.

However there is a slight discrepency from the Non League blog and the back of my photograph. The blog states Hibs were convincing 3-0 winners, however my photograph states it may have been slightly closer at 4-2 to Hibs. Official reports from the time would have been very thin on the ground, so I would like to think Hibs were 3-0 but BAOR fought back to 4-2. Either way it's a very interesting photograph.
