Morning and welcome back to SGB. It's FA cup weekend which generally means one thing, "we are focusing on the league", and so it proved for Sunderland (again) but more of that on our podcast. Link here Just Here
Today we visited Polperro AFC, who have been established since 1908. Although it was just over 50 miles away from home, it felt like a totally different world.
This is the side entrance and to be honest it gives no indication of what is inside the ground.
Admittedly this is only our third post but not only did Killigarth Park have dug outs, they also had an amazing stand-The Mat Pengelly Stand. Which, given the biting wind, gave ample protection.
Todays opponents were Lifton FC, XT was again playing. Polperro were, I think second in the league and Lifton are fourth from bottom. So you would think it would have been a fairly one sided affair. But no, despite the pitch having quite a severe slope in one corner (the photo below does not do justice to the aforementioned slope) it was infact a fairly even, well fought contest. Polperro coming out on top in a 2-1 win.
There was a reasonable amount of support in the ground for the home club and possibly only Larry in the stands for the away team. The crowd was lively, a mix of old men, wags and a few tourists who heard the noise and came to investigate.
Non-league football is great on many levels, apart from the fact it is quite often free to get in but you also see things you won't see in the premier league. Players smoking for one and this.(see photo below) Polperro had just had a shot canon off the crossbar which caused the net to come loose. The Polperro player tried to climb up and re-attach it but couldn't, so Chris the Lifton goalie held on to him and then before you knew it, Nick, the ref was in there holding on to the player aswell.
